Jun 29, 2017 The best approach to install Java on the Mac is to get the latest version of Java JRE directly from Oracle. This is fairly straight forward and you can either initiate the process from the terminal application in macOS or by going directly to the Java download page on Oracles website. Open the Terminal app and type the following. Dr Java one of the more user friendly environments for educational purposes. Mac OS may have the JDK installed as part of the system, so you may not need this step. Downloading Java 8 is best from Oracle. Newer versions (9 and 10) will not work with DrJava and may need to. The Mac OS X app has been removed; it only worked for Apple Java, which ended with Java 6. Mac users should download the Jar file, open the Security and Privacy panel in the System Preferences app, and check the box stating that they want to open the DrJava Jar file, even though is was produced a developer unknown to (unregistered with) Apple.

DrJava for Mac is a lightweight development environment for writing Java programs. It is designed primarily for students, providing an intuitive interface and the ability to interactively evaluate Java code. It also includes powerful features for more advanced users. The tool is available for free under the BSD License, and it is under active development by the JavaPLT group at Rice University.
DrJava requires a Java 2 v1.4 or later virtual machine. (Note: The JDK, not the JRE, must be installed to have access to compilation in the app.) If you need to download a JVM, we recommend Sun's JDK 5.0 for Solaris, Linux and Windows. Other users should use the Java virtual machine that comes with their operating system (including MacOS X).
Also, DrJava for Mac uses two Java Virtual Machines (one for the main program, and one for the Interactions Pane) that use Java's Remote Method Invocation (RMI) to communicate with each other. RMI uses TCP/IP as the default transport mechanism, so you must have those drivers installed. Without TCP/IP, Dr Java will not start properly.
